question about illnesses

Question:

Hi there,      I have a question.  Again I know!!!  Sorry to keep buggin you.    Have any of you been sick (like a cold or strep throat or maybe the flu?)  while cycling?  I was this past cycle.  I had strep throat,  A few days before my IUI’s I was at the RE and sick as a dog,  my throat was killing me!!!  So I asked if I could possibly take anything for it.  They prescribed penicillin 3 tabs for 10 days.  Do you think this could possibly effect my cycle in a bad way?  Should I have stopped this cycle and saved money??? Thanks Ang

Response:

Ang- I don’t have an answer for you but if you hear, let me know.  I too have a killer sore throat and am in mid cycle.   Shawna

Response:

I just dont take the meds till I get AF… Ive had a couple bouts of bronch/ashthma and I just wait on the meds…. hope you feel better soon!                        ~*~      Baby     ~*~           Fly My Angels, Fly, High Up In The Sky       And Look Down On Me Every Now And Then         And Know Im Thinking Of You Every Day…

Response:

I have the flu and my RE cancelled my whole cycle- I am so pissed at him I am meeting with a new RE.

Response:

I was on much more heavy-duty antibiotics (including IV antibiotics I administered myself at home) for the last 4+ years up until last November and my cycle was normal as ever. I don’t think they really do effect your cycle, however, penicillin isn’t safe during pregnancy — amoxicillin is.  I also don’t take ANYTHING during the first phase of my cycle.  I’ve been prescribed antibiotics for sinus infections since we started trying and I just fought it off on my own. HOWEVER, if you had a positive for strep you really need to take an antibiotic IMHO. Cindi

Weaning MOM needs help (pain)

Question:

Hi, I hope that this helps. Have you tried cold (refrigerated) cabbage leaves on your breasts, when they feel engorged? It actually does work. A lot of hospitals here in Australia use this method for women who have had babies and don’t want to breastfeed. If you are down to a few feeds a day, however, you hopefully won’t end up as engorged and sore as you did before. Try cutting the feeds down or expressing sessions by one a week. This helps the process to occur slower and gives the breasts ample time to adjust, if you take it slow you will probably find that your supply will dwindle slowly and you may only experience one or two slightly uncomfortable days. I too have had mastitis twice with two different babies. My most recent bout only 4 weeks ago. I can understand your fear of the pain. Take it slowly and you will get there eventually. I would however get back to the doctor just to be sure with the blood tinged fluid you extracted from your breast just to get it checked out.  Good luck L.

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi All, I want to first thank everyone for all the good information that I have gotten from this group. THANK YOU. My first son is now 1 year old and has been weaning himself from me for the last month.  I had pumped alot because I went back to work eight weeks after he was born.  He has only had 1 meal from Formula (my husband was both adament and supportive about that). Well, now that we are weaning I’m having some boob trouble.  I’ve had mastitis twice so I know what that’s like.  I had something else happen which kinda worried me but it went away so…..I had a sore milk duct which I think was clogged and I was able to get it unclogged by heat and pumping.  I got this gooey blood tinged mess out and that boob feels better. Now the other one is starting to feel sore. How to you dry up?  If I keep pumping because I’m afraid of Mastitis then I feel like I’ll never dry up. I’m down to pumping about 2-3 ounces every two days, but I’m so afraid to just stop. Can anyone tell me what to do on this? I have a perscription for Keflex but I don’t think I have Mastitis.  The doc gave me the script with the understanding that if I wanted to fill it I had to go get a blood pregnancy test (we’re trying). She gave me the lab paperwork.  I haven’t used either yet…. I need some advice. Thank you. — Wendy R. Williams (  )     Moo (00)  ||     |  ||     |   *  ||—W||  ||    ||

Response:

I just wanted to update everyone on my progress and clarify something I may not have said just right.  I am not nursing anymore.  The only thing I’m doing right now is pumping a couple of ounces every two days.  The pain I had is now gone. I think it was a clogged milk duct that I was able to clear through pumping. I feel that I’m right at the point of drying up, but I was afraid to take it all the way because of pain/mastitis/etc.  But with all the suggestions I’ve had so far, I feel much more comfortable finishing it up. You guys are great! Thanks so much. Wendy  8-) – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi, I hope that this helps. I think I would try sage tea, first.  Brew it strong, drink a lot of it. Er…hm. Wait.  Better make sure sage is safe during pregnancy (in case you might be pregnant) or wait until your period starts, and then do it. Sage will help to dry you right up.  And I would only pump if I started to feel ‘full’ – every 3 days, and then every 4, and then 5…until it’s more than a week since you last pumped?  I can’t imagine mastitis setting in if you only need to pump once a week, if it’s caused by not pumping. –angela

Psoriasis and Nursing

Question:

Anyone out there have Psoriasis while nursing ? For our middle son’s birth, I got the shingles when he was around three months. This time, it is a bad case of psoriasis. All the lotions, creams, gels, etc. arent’ working.   I don’t know of any drugs one would take for it. It is everywhere except my breasts and face ! Thank God for that ! Doctor has put me on Claratin for the psoriasis.. was wondering if anyone has taken Claratin for psoriasis while nursing. Or have any other suggestions please respond asap.. I’ve been having the psoriasis for about four months now. thank you !

Response:

I am not quite sure what psoriasis is, but I have had extremely dry skin since I got pregnant (2 years ago now!)  I went to the dermatologist it bugged me so much.  She recommended a soap called "Oilatum" and a no-drugs cream called Cetaphil.  That has helped. Good luck Jill – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Anyone out there have Psoriasis while nursing ? For our middle son’s birth, I got the shingles when he was around three months. When you talk about creams and gels, I’m assuming that you are including hydrocortisone lotions (prescription stregnth)? That is what is usually prescribed for psoriosis, and is usually effective, AND is fine to use while nursing. If the case does not respond to that, you need to go back to your doctor. I’m not familiar with the use of Claratin for psoriasis, but it may well be prescribed for some cases. Naomi

Response:

Hi! As a sufferer of psoriasis for about 15 years now, having tried countless medications, remedies, and combinations thereof, I hope the following advice is useful.  I am currently 18 weeks pregnant, so have discussed this at length with both my dermatologist and OB, both before I got pregnant and now during my pregnancy.  Unfortunately, I have it on my nipples as well, so I am trying to get it cleared up before my child is born, since I do plan to breastfeed: There are two prescription creams that I use, with a variety of success. Desonide .05% (generic for Desowen .05%) is the much milder of my medications, that I use for my ears, eyes, arease where the skin is thinner.  For thicker skin (elbows, kness, parts of my legs) I use Fluocin .05% (generic for Lidex .05%).  It is a much stronger steroid so I use is very sparingly and only when I have a severe breakout.   What really has cleared up my lesions, however, were two tapes, one medicated, the other not.  The medicated taped is called Cordran Tape, which is a tape which you apply to your lesion for 24 hours at at time. It contains flurandrenolide (another steroid, but more mild), and it has been the BEST at clearing up my lesions.  The other dressing I have used is DuoDerm Extra Thin sterile dressing.  This contains no medication, but you cover your lesions for up to a week at a time, and the act of occlusion is supposed to keep moisture in, etc.  I has worked for me at times, and I like using it since it does not involve medications and steriods.  The downside of both of these "tapes" is that they are expensive, but a little does go a long way, and sometimes you can get your dermatologist to give you samples to see if it works before shelling out the big bucks. The other things that have helped me:  Eucerin Cream, tepid showers (the hot water robs your skin of moisture making the lesions flare up), drink lots of water, and if you live in a climate where there is lots of sun, get out in the sun as much as possible (I live in Tucson, AZ so this is an option for me but not for many others). Finally, you should contact the National Psoriasis Foundation.  They have been extremely helpful to me in answering questions and providing info. They publish two great pamphlets on pregnancy/breastfeeding with psoriasis, and medications and psoriasis, which are free.  I understand the frustrations with the disease – there is no cure, no solid understanding of what causes it, etc.  The lesions can be painful and embarassing, since the general public tends not to understand the nature of the disease.  But there are ways to control it, and as I have found, live with it.  If you are not getting any answers from your regular doctor, I would see a dermatologist (if you haven’t already).  Sometimes it takes a series of trials with different medications before you find one that works.  For me, it is the above, which my doctors have assured me are safe during pregnancy and lactation.  Good luck in your quest – if you have any other questions feel free to email me. Metformin + Pregnancy + Imodium?

Question:

As if I didn’t have enough to worry about, I think my newly discovered pregnancy is causing the metformin I’m taking to start having the old side-effects again.  I hadn’t had diarrhea in months, but now all of the sudden, I have it with a vengeance.  I’ve been trying to get a doctor’s appointment, but no luck so far. Has anyone else taken Imodium during pregnancy?  I’m absolutely terrified of doing anything that might harm my baby or cause me to miscarry, but I’ve got the trots so bad, I don’t think I’m even going to be able to go to work tonight (not to mention the fact that I’ve developed one heck of a sore and raw backside). Thanks! Reb

During my first two pregnancies (I’ve m/c 3), I had diarrhea real bad.  The nurse never did like this.  She said I needed to get it under control because of the intestinal contractions you’re always having when you have diarrhea. The doctor never was concerned about it.  I was told to take Kaopectate.  It’s made from apple pectin and is supposed to be safe during pregnancy.  Also the nurse suggested taking Metamucil, which is fiber.  I know this may sound strange because most people take it when they’re constipated, but she said if you take it with a meal it helps bind everything together and it’ll absorb extra moisture.  She had learned this from her sister who had irritable bowel syndrome.   I hope you feel better soon.  Other pregnant women were always telling me "at least you’re not constipated", but diarrhea can be just as bad.  You may find that applying ice to your backside may help some.  Take care. Response:

Reb, I don’t know much about pregnancy or Imodium, but drinking some tea will help stop diarrhea. Herbal tea, any kind. That would be a safe, gentle method that you could try. Also psyllium fiber– actually, it works both ways regarding bathroom problems, kinda like vitex does on FSH/LH. Good luck, and I hope you feel better soon! —Elizabeth

Response:

If you want to go the herbal tea route I would get an herb book to check out the herbs first.  Not all are safe during pregnancy.  In fact, some can be downright dangerous.  An example of one you shouldn’t take, at least not in early pregnancy, is peppermint tea.  I believe the peppermint oil can cause uterine contractions.  Anyway, check it out first. Good luck. Despina Expecting a Metformin baby, it’s a boy! EDD 3/3/00 – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -ElizabthW wrote:

Bag Balm is a product that has been around for over 100 years. It’s original use was for dairy cattle to keep the skin around their utters soft. Farmers discovered that if they put it on their hands it would protect from drying a chaffing. Bag Balm is also good for pets. It helps in the healing of cuts, scratches, skin irritations, and paw abrasions. For almost as long as Bag Balm has been around, farmers have used it themselves to heal hands cracked by cold weather and hard work. St John's Wort & pregnant/lactating women

Question:

Thanks for your reply. Studies done in Europe show no reason for pregnant or lactating women to refrain from using St John’s Wort.

Could you point me to any on-line source for more info on these studies? Many warnings on bottles are there because the company wants to cover their butt, not necessarily because anything will go wrong.

That’s pretty much the way it is. I counted no fewer than SIXTY SEVEN side effects listed on the insert in an over the counter medication I bought the other day for a common cold. Obviously the list is there to cover the butt of the manufacturer. I personally would not hesitate to use this plant.

Well, I’d be a bit more hesitant until I knew in detail what it was all about. The last thing you want is to take something now and find out when your kid is sixteen years old and spontaneously combusts that it was because you took something you shouldn’t have :-) Tim Jackson Johannesburg South Africa      /_/     / o o    (== ^ ==)      ) – (     ( ) ( )   ( ( ) ( ) )   (_(_)_(_)_)

Where were those studies published?  Can you give us a reference?

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Just about anywhere I’ve looked so far says that St John’s Wort should not be taken by pregnant or lactating women. The impression I get is that the reason for this warning is that proper tests/trials have yet to be done on pregnant/lactating women and NOT that St John’s Wort has proved harmful when taken by women who are either pregnant or lactating. In other words the manufacturers are simply covering their backs. Can anyone shed any light on whether or not it would be safe for a woman who is still breast feeding a baby to take St John’s Wort? Thanks, Tim

I don’t know if any animal or clinical research has been done to aggressively address the issue, but according to an authoritative source — I believe psychiatrist Harold Bloomfield and writer Peter McWilliams’ "classic" on SJW (free online at http://www.hypericum.com ) — German MD’s have prescribed SJW to pregnant women for years with no apparent ill effects.  Probably the best cautious resource on this and other fine points re SJW is Camilla Cracchiolo’s FAQ: http://www.primenet.com/~camilla/STJOHNS.FAQ If you want to play it really safe, there are other chemically nonintrusive antidepressants, like cognitive-behavioural psychotherapies, support groups, meditation/relaxation, acupuncture (the NIH is even funding a trial for depressed pregnant women), exercise (as long as it’s still safe during pregnancy), correcting any pregnancy-related nutritional or hormonal imbalances (e.g. copper/zinc or estrogen/progesterone excess), moderate antidepressant supplementation (folic acid [also to prevent birth defects], omega-3’s, B6…), and following a damned good diet. That’s a given. The problem is often that "conventional" doctors will err on the safe side by saying "no" when what they really mean is "I don’t know". Tim Jackson Johannesburg South Africa      /_/     / o o    (== ^ ==)      ) – (     ( ) ( )   ( ( ) ( ) )   (_(_)_(_)_)

My doctor said it was a late side effect from paxil. About 3 months ago paxil just stopped working for me all of a sudden and even made me sick. I have started reading all about st. john’s wort, and I am eager to try it. My only question is if any one taking it for a long period of time has excperianced any sagnificant weight gain while taking it, or if anyone has heard anything about the possabilitys of weight gain, I would greatly appreciate it if you could contact me at my Email address.     Thank You! St Johns Wort question

Question:

Hypericin, the active component in St. John’s Wort, is a known photosensitizing agent.  Excessive doses of SJW may potentiate MAO inhibition.  Because of this, it should not be taken with other MAO inhibitors or CNS stimulants.  I’ve never heard of it leading to erectile dysfunction.  Interesting. I believe Bloomfield and McWilliams state in their classic <g on SJW (online at http://www.hypericum.com ) that it HAS for years been freely used in pregnant women in Europe.  But in Europe, the LI 160 formulation is most commonly prescribed.  It’s an alcohol extract, with very little MAOI activity and perhaps less potentially toxic in other respects.  It’s available in NA as Kira brand SJW.  Other products sold here rarely, if ever, specify if they’re alcohol or water extracts.  I’d also recommend checking out Camilla Crachiollo’s formidable online FAQ on SJW for her opinion ( http://www.primenet.com/~camilla/STJOHNS.FAQ ). Have you tried Forza from Drinks That Work? You can find them at drinksthatwork.com or 888/929-9929. It contains SJW, ginseng, rosavin and bitter orange.

Tinctures are liquid, but the standardized extracts used in all or most of the European research are typically formulated into tablets or capsules.  In other words, an extract can be liquid or solid. Can anyone tell me?  What do the labels say? — Cathy <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< "If you must be addicted to something, make it creativity."~MS To send email, remove "nospam" from address.

The labels say nothing about pregnancy, basically just stuff like "It tastes like sugar. It can be used virtually everywhere sugar is used." — Debbie Cusick I plan to be a procrastinator some day if I ever get around to it. Check out the asdlc FAQ at: http://www.grossweb.com/asdlc – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Can anyone tell me?  What do the labels say?

Response:

Cathy, Splenda is supposed to be safe, but my feeling when pregnant was to be ultra paranoid about all chemicals. If I was overreacting, then I merely missed out on 8 months of drinking coffee and eating junk. If 1/100th of the paranoia was justified, I might have saved my child a lifetime of problems. Preganancy is still not totally understood, nor is the effect of many things on the baby. So it is probably best to eat a simple diet with naturally occurring foods and a preponderance of protein. — Jenny *Sorry about the lack of email address but I’m up to here with spam :<
